Egyptian Pyramids

This is part of my series on Egypt:

After visiting all the temples in Upper Nile, the remaining highlights were the Egyptian Pyramids in the Lower Nile. The sights in Upper Nile and Lower Nile have very different feel.

Upper Nile have temples and monuments that are full of drawings and hieroglyphs. You can imagine the people that lived thousands of years ago building their civilization. To appreciate these temples, you need to be up close and look at these drawings and hieroglyphs.

The pyramids are older. They are huge structures built in the desert. To appreciate these, you need to be far away so entire pyramid can fit in camera frame. The result is distant or disconnected feel. Just take photos and move on. Besides these massive structures, you don't see much sign of ancient civilization. In fact, it feels like out of this world, except for the hundreds and thousands of tourists and tour buses.

All are located within drive of Cairo. You should just hit all the pyramids in 1 day:

  • Giza: 3 Pyramids and Great Sphinx

  • Dahshur: Red Pyramid and Bent Pyramid

  • Saqqara: Stepped Pyramid of Djoser

  • Memphis: Open air museum

Giza

The most iconic of Egypt sights. The 3 pyramids are Great Pyramid, Pyramid of Khafre, and Pyramid of Menkaure. Plus the Great Sphinx.

I had to tell the driver where to go and where to stop. So I can capture panoramic photos of the 3 pyramids.

Once on foot, we could walk around as we please. Though it was quite a bit of walk to go all the way around the pyramids. And depends on how much time you have. With kid in the group, I have to just get my photos done quickly.

The Great Sphinx was a bit of disappointment from photographers point of view. Many tourists concentrated in small area. It was not possible to take a photo of Great Sphinx with Pyramid in the background

Dahshur

Wide open area with very limited number of tourists when we visited. That was great. We had almost the entire horizon to ourselves. However, my kid started to complain. So I didn't get a chance to walk around. I just took the photos from the direction of the parking lot.

Red Pyramid: Luckily there were some clouds to had some details to the sky.

Bent Pyramid:

Saqqara

Stepped Pyramid of Djoser: There were nice paved areas for walking around in front of the pyramid:

Memphis

If you are short on time, I suggest removing Memphis from your list. There is an small open air museum. The key highlight here is colossal sculpture of Rameses II. It is currently laid on its back:
