Edfu and Kom Ombo Day Trip

Updated: Jul 24, 2023

This is part of my series on Egypt:

Temple of Edfu and Temple of Kom Ombo are along the road between Luxor and Aswan. We hired private car to travel from Luxor to Aswan, so we stopped at these temples for sightseeing.

Similar to Dendera and Abydos, these temples were not as busy as Luxor. I read that Edfu can be busy, as many riverboat cruises include day excursion to Edfu. However, when we were there, there was not many tourists. It was quite easy to take photos without many tourists in the scene.

Edfu

The temple of Edfu is definitely worth visiting. The exterior is grand and well preserved. The design is similar to Medinet Habu. Temple is completely surrounded by exterior pylon and walls, which are intact. Insides of the temple is nice, but cannot compare versus Dendera or Abydos.

Coming up to the temple, visitors are greeted with this massive front pylon:

Once you enter the front pylon, there is a large courtyard before the temple. Courtyard is surrounded by columns. This photo is taken facing the front pylon:

This is one side of the courtyard:

From the courtyard, there are paths on both sides, which separates the exterior wall and the temple wall:

This path goes all the way around the temple. And it widens:

This is the rear of the temple: (The ultra wide on my smartphone completely distorted vertical lines.)

Kom Ombo

Kom Ombo is unique in that it is a double temple, dedicated to two sets of gods. Unfortunately, the temple is mainly ruins. In another country, this is a must see. But in Egypt, you probably can bypass Kom Ombo, unless you are into crocodile 😂.

This is the front entrance to the temple, with the double entry gateway:

There is Crocodile Museum next to the temple. This is crocodile god Sobek:
