Tips for Visiting Egypt: https://jimmy1photo.wixsite.com/blog/post/tips-for-visiting-egypt
Luxor has sights on both east bank and west bank of the Nile River. If you are coming by cruise ship, the ship will dock on one side and then the other side. We didn't use cruise ship. We arrived by air, and we hired private car (without tour guide) to drive us around for sightseeing.
Right upon arrival on flight from Cairo to Luxor, we got a car that picked us up at airport, and took us to west bank for 1/2 day sightseeing. Then return to east bank for night stay at hotel. Then on another day, we did sightseeing on east bank in morning, then to west bank in afternoon, and return to hotel on east bank.
We planned based on priority and sightseeing time. We didn't expect the travel time from east bank to west bank, and back. The bridge crossing is 6 miles south of Luxor. But the roads are not well maintained. And there are police and military checkpoints at major intersections. Travel time by car is around 50 minutes 1-way. If you go by car, try to minimize your driving time, by grouping sights by east and west bank. Visit east bank one day; then west bank on another day.
Major sights on the east bank:
Karnak Temple
Luxor Temple
Luxor Museum
Karnak Temple
Must see. Quite well preserved considering this is over 2000 years old. Massive columns full of hieroglyph still stand. I didn't count them, but there are suppose to be 134 columns. Unfortunately, the roofs of the temples no longer stand. And some walls are still standing.
Entry way with ram sphinx:
There are so many historical artifacts. They are not labeled or marked. I just found this in the corner that no one cared about:
Massive columns with hieroglyphs:
Obelisk:
There are so many buildings and statues. We just admire and enjoy the sights. We didn't have tour guide, so we don't know the history behind these.
Luxor Temple
Another must see. Smaller than Karnak temple, but still very impressive.
Avenue of sphinx at the entrance of Luxor temple. This avenue connected Luxor Temple to Karnak Temple, 1.7 miles away.
Luxor Temple entrance, with single remaining obelisk, statues, and pylon. The obelisks were originally a pair. The other obelisk is now in Paris, France.
Inside are statues, columns, and building ruins:
