I had the same computer desk for past 20 years. Desk was around 28" deep and 55" wide. It was quite cramped; both depth and width. I lived with this for a long time. It didn't bother me as much before, as I had a 27" main center monitor and 24" side monitor. Around 3 months ago, I got a new 27" gaming monitor and kept the old 27" monitor as side monitor. With two 27" monitors and all the electronics devices I have, my old desk was too small.
I wanted to get a new computer/gaming desk/table. My main requirements are just depths and width. Desks that are less than 28" deep are not enough for me, especially with 27" monitor; and there is no room for medium to large mouse pad. So I want something > 30" deep. For width, obviously wider provides more desk area. I was looking at > 60". I don't care for storage, like drawers or cabinets. So technically, this is a table, not a desk, as it doesn't have storage.
It was actually harder than I expected. Checked some gaming desks on Amazon, Staples, Office Depot. The issue with many desks is that the top surface is not single piece, but multiple pieces. That can cause unevenness. They do this so that the packaging can be more compact, to reduce shipping cost. And prices are not competitive; many are > $200-300, with poor reviews.
While watching bunch of YouTube video, one video mentioned Home Depot. He used legs from existing table/desk from Home Depot, and then added a butcher block for top surface. That lead me to check Home Depot.
I don't think about Home Depot for home office products. Surprisingly, Home Depot offers quite a bit of options. And prices are very reasonable. Note that Home Depot does not use the term gaming desk. And some listings do not even use computer or PC in description. Home Depot uses desk when there is storage; table when there is no storage; which technically is correct. But just searching for computer desk might not show all the listings.
For instance, this model I purchase is called conference table: BYBLIGHTCapen 70.8 in. Retangular Brown Wood Conference Table 6FT. It was only $150; $175 with $25 off during Black Friday sale. Dimensions are 32" deep and 71" wide. This works great fit for me. The table is a bit tall, at 30". Something like 29" would be ideal for me. But I'm 5'10" so I can manage the 30" height.
It is engineered wood, which is better than MDF or particle board, but not as good as plywood. The top surface is made of 3 pieces. Ideally, I prefer single piece for top. But at this price, have to compromise. Positive is that middle piece is 40" wide. So that means all my main use area (center monitor, mouse, keyboard) is on this single middle piece. Then there are 2 smaller pieces added on to the sides. So any unevenness does not affect my usage.
I'm super happy with my new setup. This photo is taken with UWA lens to capture everything on the table. So edges and corners of the photos do look elongated and distorted.
