GMMK Pro Copycats

Updated: Jul 24, 2022

GMMK Pro is a premium, high-quality, and high-end keyboard. Many consider this end-game. Barebone keyboard starts at $170. Complete pre-build from Glorious is $350. I believe GMMK Pro first came out with this 75% keyboard layout, with 83 keys, including volume knob at upper right. Here is what Glorious GMMK Pro keyboard looks like:

Then came the copycats. There are a bunch of Chinese brands that came out with similar

keyboards. It seems that these companies are related. They follow the same design and use the same molds for manufacturing. Change the color, mount different switches and keycaps, and put their name own name on the box. These names are like Epomaker, Akko, Ajazz, Feker. They can be available as custom, pre-build, or both. Some have options with wireless and wired. Most do not have support open source software, but a few support QMK/VIA.

Below are some examples that look similar to GMMK Pro layout, with 83 keys. Insert is replaced with Del, which actually makes more sense to me.

Below are some variations on this design. I guess you can call these inspired by GMMK Pro. At least there are some changes so that layout is not identical.

Ajazz AK816: This one has 82 keys, instead of 83. Home key is at top row. Del is at right, along with PageUp and PageDown. End key is removed.

Epomaker TH80: This has 81 keys. It is missing the Home and End. The Del is on the right side, along with PageUp and PageDown. The arrows keys are not offset, i.e. not separated from Shift and Ctrl keys.

Keydous NJ80-AP is a premium version with the same 81 keys layout:

I researched these Chinese knock off brands in my latest search into 75% keyboards. These keyboards offer excellent value. Focus is on cramming in features (such as wireless), decent components (lubed switches), and variations on keycap color/profile. Build quality is good, but not top notch. They skimp on the material: most are all-plastic; some have metal top combined with plastic bottoms. Prices range from $90 to $150.

I ended up buying Epomaker TH80, because it is such a good value, at $90 for complete pre-build. It offers excellent typing experience. However, there are implementations and issues with the power and power management (batter for the wireless). I will provide my review in upcoming blog.
